The 2027 AFL season: a later start, 24 rounds, a ten-team finals series and the markets on each
Event · AFL 2027
The AFL has fixed the frame of 2027 before the fixture itself: round 1 in the week of 17 March, Gather Round on 8–11 April, wildcard finals in early September and the Grand Final at the MCG on Saturday 2 October. This page covers what is confirmed, what is still to come, and how weekly and season-long markets work.

AFL betting for 2027 begins in an odd position: the league has published the frame of the season but not the picture inside it. The first round, the Gather Round weekend, the shape of the finals and the Grand Final date are fixed; the round-by-round fixture is not, and the AFL expects to release it in mid-November 2026. Until that list arrives, the only markets worth reading are the ones that do not depend on who plays whom in which week.

The confirmed frame of the 2027 season
What the AFL has announced so far, in order:
| Date (2027) | What happens |
|---|---|
| 11–15 March | 150th anniversary Test, Australia v England, at the MCG |
| 17 or 18 March to 21 March | Round 1: all 18 clubs, nine games |
| 8–11 April | Gather Round, South Australia |
| Late August | Round 24 closes the home-and-away season |
| First week of September | Wildcard finals |
| Saturday 2 October | Grand Final at the MCG |
Two changes from recent seasons. Opening Round, the split first weekend that ran for three years, is gone; every club plays in round 1. And the whole season sits a week later than usual because the MCG is busy with cricket in mid-March. The knock-on is a Grand Final in October for the first time since 2016, leaving out the COVID-affected 2020 season.
What the fixture release will change
Clubs have already lodged their requests, and more Friday night double-headers are under discussion. None of that is binding until the AFL publishes the list. For a bettor, the release matters in three ways:
- Double-up opponents. Twenty-four rounds among 18 clubs means every side meets some opponents twice and others once. Who a contender plays twice is the single biggest fixture factor in a ladder-position price.
- Travel and short breaks. Interstate trips and six-day turnarounds are fixed by the fixture, and they show up in the line market on the weeks concerned.
- Bye rounds. The timing of each club's bye decides which weeks a multi has fewer legs to choose from.
Our advice is simple: hold off on any premiership or top-four position you would size up because of an easy draw until the fixture exists. A price set before the release is a price on a draw nobody has seen.
The ten-team finals series
The AFL now sends ten teams to the finals. At the end of round 24 the top six rest for a week while seventh plays tenth and eighth plays ninth. The two winners take seventh and eighth, and the familiar top-eight series follows: first against fourth, second against third, fifth against eighth, sixth against seventh. Finals grow from nine matches to eleven.
That rebuild changes several familiar AFL betting markets:
- To make the finals now pays on a top-ten finish, a lower bar than the old top eight.
- To finish top six is the new premium position, because it buys a week of rest.
- Premiership futures on a side hovering around ninth stay alive into September instead of dying in round 24.
Weekly markets and the arithmetic
During the season the main markets on each match are head-to-head, the line, total points, winning margin bands and player goal markets. The line does most of the work in uneven games. Say a book sets a favourite at −15.5 points at 1.90 and the outsider at +15.5 at 1.90, example prices only. Each side implies 52.6%, together 105.3%, so a little over 5% of the money on both sides is the book's share.
Margin bands, such as one to 39 points or 40 and over, carry wider margins because there are more outcomes to price. Player goal markets carry wider ones still. The narrowest line on any round is usually the plain head-to-head on a close game, which is why AFL betting on multis built from heavily favoured head-to-head legs often returns less than it looks: each leg's margin multiplies through the ticket. Our board of crypto betting sites with the best odds is the place to compare that cost.
Season-long tickets in crypto
A premiership future taken in March settles on 2 October, more than six months later. Staked in a volatile coin, it carries a second position on the coin's price for the same six months; a correct pick can lose dollar value and a losing one can look cheaper than it was. A stablecoin keeps the return in the unit you meant to bet. Weekly head-to-head bets settle within hours and make the coin far less important.
Small weekly multis also favour a cashier with a low entry point; the board of low deposit crypto betting sites sorts operators on exactly that. For the wider comparison, start with the list of crypto sportsbooks ranked on their terms, and for bettors at home in Australia there is a separate ranking of crypto betting sites in Australia.

This is opinion, not a tip. The wildcard round rewards depth more than peak strength: a side good enough for sixth avoids an extra knockout, while a side in seventh has to win five finals in a row to lift the cup, one more than fifth or sixth. That makes “top six” a sharper market than “top four” for mid-priced contenders. We would also expect Gather Round, with every club in one state over four days, to produce the tightest lines of the home-and-away season, since home-ground edges shrink when most clubs are away. Our estimate is that the first real price movement of 2027 comes on fixture day in November, not in March.
Keeping a long season in proportion
Twenty-four rounds plus five weeks of finals is half a year of betting opportunities. AFL betting across a season works best with a fixed weekly budget set before round 1 and a separate, smaller pot for season-long futures; the limits and support pages explain the tools. The full ranking of top crypto betting sites shows how each sportsbook earned its row.
Australia's other winter code runs on a different calendar, with a Las Vegas opener in February and State of Origin in Auckland; our guide to the 2027 NRL season covers it.
