The 2027 NRL season: an 18-team ladder, a Las Vegas opener, Origin in Auckland and the markets in between

The draw still to come

Most NRL betting markets are about who plays whom, and that list is the missing piece. Until the 2027 draw is out, three things are unknown:

• The round count and the byes. With 18 clubs the league can run full rounds, but whether Origin weeks carry byes, and how many, is a draw decision still to be published.
• Double-up opponents. No club plays every other club twice; which contenders a side meets twice weighs heavily in ladder prices.
• Travel. Perth is a long trip from the east coast, and the number of Perth away games each club draws will matter to the line on those weeks.

A season-long price struck before the draw is a price on a schedule nobody has seen. Season markets taken now should be small, or sized for the uncertainty.

State of Origin: three games, one in Auckland

The Origin series is three matches between New South Wales and Queensland, played mid-season while the club competition continues around it. In 2027 Game II, on Wednesday 16 June, goes to Eden Park in Auckland, the first Origin fixture played in New Zealand. Games I and III have no published dates or venues yet.

Origin markets come in layers:

• Series winner, priced from the day the draw is out and repriced after every game.
• Single-game head-to-head and line, with the line usually narrow because the sides are close.
• Player markets, such as anytime tryscorer, opened once the squads are named.
• Series correct score, 3–0 or 2–1 to either side.

The Auckland game raises a fresh question for the line. Neither side has played Origin there, so whatever crowd edge either camp is used to at home is absent. Our view: expect the Game II line to sit closer to level than an equivalent Sydney or Brisbane fixture would, an estimate rather than a published price.

Weekly markets and the arithmetic

Every round brings head-to-head, line, total points, winning-margin bands such as 1–12 and 13 or more, and tryscorer markets. The line is the workhorse. Suppose a book sets a favourite at −6.5 at 1.87 and the outsider at +6.5 at 1.95, example prices only. The implied chances are 53.5% and 51.3%, which add to 104.8%. Just under 5% of the money on both sides is the book's share.

Tryscorer markets carry far wider margins because there are dozens of runners in one match, and the price of a winger depends on a team list that only lands days before kick-off. Head-to-head prices on big favourites look safe in a multi, but the margin of each leg compounds; three legs at about 5% each cost roughly 14% of the ticket's fair value. The finals and season-long markets

The 2026 finals ran on a top-eight system: first against fourth and second against third in qualifying finals, fifth against eighth and sixth against seventh in elimination finals. The qualifying final winners rest into the preliminary finals; the top four need two wins to reach the Grand Final, the bottom four need three. The NRL has not yet published 2027 finals dates.

Season markets follow from that structure:

• Premiership and minor premiership, the second settled when the regular season ends.
