Rugby world cup 2027 betting starts with a calendar, not a price. The tournament opens in Perth on 1 October 2027 and closes in Sydney on 13 November, so a bet on the winner placed before kick-off is a six-week position, and every number you take has to hold its value across all of it. This page sets out what the organisers have published, how the new format turns 24 teams into 16, and how the main markets are built.

The tournament on one card

World Rugby describes the 2027 edition as 24 teams, 52 matches, 19 match days, seven cities and eight venues. It is the first men's Rugby World Cup with 24 sides and the first with a round of 16.

StageDates (2027)Where

Two details matter for anyone pricing match by match. Every team gets at least five rest days between games, which flattens the old problem of a side playing twice in a week. And 17 October is billed as Super Sunday, five pool matches in one day, the last round before the knockouts. That day decides most of the third-place race described below.

The six pools

The draw placed the hosts and New Zealand together, and paired four Six Nations sides two by two, Ireland with Scotland and England with Wales.

PoolTeams
AAustralia, New Zealand, Chile, Hong Kong China
BSouth Africa, Italy, Georgia, Romania
CArgentina, Canada, Fiji, Spain
DIreland, Scotland, Uruguay, Portugal
EFrance, Japan, Samoa, United States
FEngland, Wales, Tonga, Zimbabwe

Australia's route is fixed: Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium on Friday 1 October (6:45pm local), New Zealand at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 9 October (5:10pm local), and Chile in Brisbane on Saturday 16 October (3:10pm local).

From 24 to 16: the new knockout ladder

Each pool sends its top two through. The four best third-placed teams join them, ranked first on competition points, then on points difference, then on try difference. That last step is new for bettors: a heavy win over the weakest side in a pool can be worth as much as a narrow loss to the strongest, because it may be the tiebreak that keeps a third-placed team alive.

The bracket is not symmetric. The winners of Pools A, B, C and D each meet a third-placed team in the round of 16. The winners of Pools E and F meet a runner-up. So topping Pool E or F buys a harder first knockout than topping the other four, and a “to win the pool” price should reflect that.

Pool markets to look for:

  • To win the pool and to qualify (top two or best third).
  • Straight forecast, first and second in order.
  • Pool points or tries for a single team.
  • Stage of elimination, which pays on how far a side gets rather than on the title.

Outright prices over six weeks

In rugby world cup 2027 betting the outright is the headline market: one name for the whole tournament. With 24 runners and a knockout from the last 16, the board is steep at the top and long at the bottom. An illustrative board, our estimate only, might show two or three sides between 4.00 and 6.00, a second group between 8.00 and 15.00, and every tier-two nation at 500.00 or longer.

Add the implied probabilities on a real board and they usually come to more than 100%. The excess is the book's margin, and on outrights it is wider than on a single match, because the book is carrying six weeks of uncertainty. Two habits help. Compare the same name across several books, since outright margins vary more than match margins. And consider a split position: a small stake before 1 October and a second one after 17 October, when the bracket is known and half of the field is gone.

Match markets: handicap, totals and the arithmetic

Most pool matches are mismatches on paper, so the head-to-head price is often too short to be worth reading. The handicap line does the work. If a book sets a favourite at −30.5 points at 1.91 and the underdog at +30.5 at 1.91 (example prices), each side implies 52.4%. Together they make 104.7%, which means about 4.5% of every pound or dollar staked across both sides is the book's share.

Totals work the same way on combined points. Watch three things the rugby calendar changes:

  • Rotation. With five-day minimum rest, coaches rotate against weaker opposition; teams are named in the days before kick-off, and the line moves when they are.
  • Weather. A wet ball cuts the total more than it cuts the handicap, so read the forecast for the host city on match day.
  • Tiebreak incentives. A side chasing points difference for a best-third place keeps attacking at 40 points up, which pushes totals and handicaps higher late in the pool phase.

In-play markets follow every scoring change; if you prefer to bet as the match unfolds, compare live crypto betting sites before the opening weekend rather than during it.

Holding a six-week ticket in crypto

The rugby is priced in decimals; the stake is priced in a coin, and that is the part of rugby world cup 2027 betting most guides skip. A bitcoin stake placed on 1 October settles at whatever bitcoin is worth on 13 November, so a correct pick can still return less in dollar terms than it cost, and a wrong one can feel cheaper than it was. A stablecoin removes that second layer. That is why a long outright fits USDT betting sites better than a volatile balance, while a single pool match settled in two hours makes the coin matter far less.

For the operators themselves, our board of crypto rugby betting sites ranks each sportsbook on what its terms print about coins, payout periods and caps. Bettors in Australia, watching matches in their own evening hours, can start from the best crypto betting sites for Australia.

Our view on the draw

This section is opinion, not a forecast. Pool A looks like the cleanest two-team pool: Australia against New Zealand on 9 October probably decides first and second rather than who goes home, so the pool-winner market is the interesting one there, not the qualification market. Pool D, with Ireland and Scotland together, is the pool where a single result on the day moves most money, because the loser risks a round-of-16 tie against a pool winner. Pool F, with England and Wales, carries the same shape. Our estimate is that at least one tier-one side will finish third in its pool and survive on the best-third table, which makes points difference against the smaller nations worth watching from the first weekend.

Before you place anything

Rugby world cup 2027 betting rewards patience more than early conviction. Most of the useful information arrives in the last week of the pool phase, and the tournament schedule gives you a full week between 17 October and the round of 16 to reprice. Set a total budget for the six weeks before the first match and use the deposit limits and help pages if the tournament starts to set the budget for you.

When does the 2027 Rugby World Cup start and finish?
World Rugby lists the pool phase from 1 to 17 October 2027 and the final on 13 November 2027 at Stadium Australia in Sydney. The opening match is Australia against Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium on 1 October.
How many teams reach the knockouts?
Sixteen of the 24. The top two in each of the six pools go through, joined by the four best third-placed teams, ranked on competition points first, then points difference, then try difference.
Is rugby world cup 2027 betting different from betting a normal test match?
The single-match markets are the same. The difference is time: an outright struck before 1 October stays open until 13 November, so the price you take has to cover six weeks of injuries, selection and form, and a stake in a volatile coin carries six weeks of price movement too.
When is the Wallabies against the All Blacks pool match?
Rugby Australia lists it for Saturday 9 October 2027 at Accor Stadium in Sydney, kick-off 5:10pm local time. It is the second of Australia's three Pool A matches.
Are the prices on this page real odds?
No. Every price shown here is an example or our estimate, used to explain how a market is built. Live odds move from the moment the books open the market, so read the board on the day you bet.
